Wash the boat and engine
The first step of boat care is to wash the exterior of the boat. This is important to do for more reasons than just keeping the boat clean and tidy. To start with, cleaning your boat will remove free-riding aquatic organisms on your boat. It is therefore not only important to clean the inside of the boat but also the exterior.
Boat cleaning is also an important process to protect the boat’s structure by keeping the finish intact. Because if you boat on the sea, the salt water can be corrosive and scratch the boat. And even if you only use your boat in fresh water, it is important to clean the boat between outings. Do not forget to also wash the engine!

Polish the boat
Over time, your boat’s glossy gelcoat will begin to oxidise and dull. Don’t worry – polishing your boat can restore it to its former glory!
Boat polishing can be split into three tasks:
- Apply rubbing to your boat.
- Apply boat polish.
- Wax the boat with a boat wax.
We have written a separate guide that describes in more detail how to wash and polish your boat. Check it out to get more information on how to do this!
How to paint your boat with antifouling paint
It is important to have patience when it comes to boat maintenance. This is especially true when painting your boat with antifouling paint, particularly when painting the boat outdoors. Wait until the weather conditions allow it to be optimally carried out.
Then you can get to work and follow these steps:
- Make sure you have everything you need to paint your boat.
- Wear personal protective equipment such as coveralls, gloves, face mask, and safety glasses.
- Ensure the area is well-ventilated.
- Mark the waterline and use masking tape to cover the surfaces that will not be painted.
- Ensure that the surface to be painted with antifouling paint is clean, firm, and dry.
- Remove any loose antifouling paint. I may be a good idea to remove all old paint from the bottom of the boat between outings.
- Sand down the surface so that it is whole and even.
- Then start painting the surface with a roller or brush. Apply a little extra paint to the parts of the hull that are subjected to the most friction.
- Once the paint has dried, the boat is ready to launch!
Frequently asked questions about boat care
